Past events 2012
We regularly host events, including launches, signings, readings, and announcements of prizes. These are usually held in the shop in the early evenings, where you can enjoy a glass of wine with your launch speech, and take the opportunity for some after-hours browsing. We also sell books for events held at other venues.

Chris Wisbey launched of another of Sally Wise's wonderful cookbooks! We will also be celebrating the release of her book Slow Cooker 2.
Event: Isobelle Carmody

The Hobart Bookshop and the Tasmanian Writers' Centre were pleased to host an event celebrating the release of Isobelle Carmody's new book, Metro Winds. Isobelle is one of Australia's most beloved fantasy writers, and the author of the best-selling Obernewtyn Chronicles.

With publisher 40South, we were pleased to host the launch, by Wayne Roycroft, of the story of Laurie Morgan, Australia's first equestrian Olympic gold medallist.

We were pleased to host an evening reading by Geoff Goodfellow (with wine kindly provided by Vinosity Wines), author of more than ten books including, most recently, the poetry collection Waltzing with Jack Dancer (2011), featuring the photography of Randy Larcombe.
Geoff is a Bush Slam winner (ABC TV), a shortlisted Age Literary Award nominee, and an extremely powerful and entertaining poet.
Book launch: Undercover of Lightness (Andrew Burke)

The Hobart Bookshop was pleased to host the launch, by Philomena van Rijswijk, of Andrew Burke's new poetry collection, published by Walleah Press.
Andrew Burke is an Australian poet who has lived most of his life in Perth. In his teens, Burke read Kerouac and Ginsberg and other 'Beat' writers, and they gained his interest more than the literature he was studying at school. He aped their style in all he wrote, and published his first short story at 18. He has written on a daily basis ever since: stories, plays, poems, and-to feed family-advertising material and videos, annual reports and press releases.

The Hobart Bookshop was pleased to host the launch, by Karen Knight, of Fran Graham's poetry collection On a Hook Behind the Door.
Event: As I Was Saying (Robert Dessaix)

We were very pleased to host this event celebrating the release of Robert Dessaix's latest book.
As I Was Saying is a swirling conversation with the reader on everything from travel to dogs and cats, from sport and swearing to the pleasures of idleness. Punctuated at regular intervals by talks Dessaix has given on a wide range of subjects, as well as by some of his most incisive journalism, the conversation invites the reader to join a leisurely guided tour of his chamber of curiosities, featuring pieces collected all over the globe from across the centuries.

Book launch: Other People's Houses (Megan Schaffner, editor)

Robert Cox launched the short story collection Other People's Houses. It includes fifteen works by thirteen writers, all of whom are members of the Tasmanian branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writers.
Book launch: Tasmania Over Five Generations (John Biggs)

The Hon. Andrew Wilkie, MP. launched Tasmania Over Five Generations: Return to Van Diemen's Land?. The book traces the life of Biggs' great-great-grandfather, Abraham, who arrived in Tasmania in 1833. It also examines the social and polital history of the times through the lives of four of Abraham's descendants.
Book launches: Reign of Beasts (Tansy Rayner Roberts) & Sea Hearts (Margo Lanagan)

We were excited to host the launch of Reign of Beasts as our first event of 2012. Rowena Cory Daniells launched the final book in Roberts' Creature Court trilogy which, according to Tansy's website, "is a dark fantasy trilogy featuring flappers, shape-changers and bloodthirsty court politics."
Margo Lanagan also joined us for the evening, and her book Sea Hearts was launched by Richard Harland. Sea Hearts is an extraordinary tale of desire and revenge, of loyalty, heartache and human weakness, and of the unforeseen consequences of all-consuming love.
