Past events 2010

We regularly host events, including launches, signings, readings, and announcements of prizes. These are usually held in the shop in the early evenings, where you can enjoy a glass of wine with your launch speech, and take the opportunity for some after-hours browsing. We also sell books for events held at other venues.

Check our calendar of upcoming events, or have a look at photos and highlights from past events below.

If you would like to be added to our events mailing list, see our Bookshop Community page. If you are interested in holding an event with us, please email us.

Book Launch/Reading/Event
The Lark Distillery (Davey St), 6:00pm Wednesday 15th December 2010

The Hobart Bookshop was very pleased to join with the Tasmanian Writers' Centre at the Lark Distillery to celebrate the 2010 Broadsheet, 'Away With Words'. The broadsheet lists more than 50 books published this year by Tasmanians. You can pick up a copy of the broadsheet from us or from the Writers' Centre.

The evening also featured the launch of John Tully's new novel, Dark Clouds on the Mountain. Charles Woolley launched the book with an entertaining and cheeky speech, and we then moved on to a conversation with Chris Gallagher (TWC Director), John Tully, and writer Geoff Dean, who had already treated us to a reading of one of his short stories. You can buy Dark Clouds on the Mountain from us here. You can also buy Geoff's latest collection of short stories, Mysteries, Myths and Miracles.

Prize Announcement

Hobart Bookshop, 5:30pm Thursday 14th October

The Hobart Bookshop is proud to continue its support of the annual Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize, in association with Island magazine.

This year, we hosted the announcement of the prize, with minor prizes presented by the Right Hon the Lord Mayor of Hobart, Alderman Rob Valentine, and the major winner announced by our own Christopher Pearce. The evening also featured the introduction of Island's new editor Sarah Kanowski, who will begin in January 2011.

Along with a glass of wine, our guests were treated to poetry readings by Sarah (who chose one of her favourite Gwen Harwood poems), by Adrienne Eberhard (Island's poetry editor, who read an extract from one of the interstate minor winners' poems), and by the Lord Mayor (who read another extract), and, of course, the major winner.

The major winner (judged this year by Jean Kent and Maria Takolander) was Maureen O'Shaughnessy, for her poem 'Thursday, July 15'. Maureen is a NSW writer, and we were very pleased to welcome her to Hobart for the announcement, and to read her poem.

You can find a list of the minor winners, as well as a copy of the judges' report, on the Island website.
